The Stonewall Sling: A Cocktail of Rebellion in a Glass
Ever wonder what a revolution tastes like? At The HideAway in Phnom Penh, we believe history can be honored with more than just words—it can be celebrated with a perfectly balanced, defiantly delicious cocktail. The Stonewall Sling isn’t just a drink; it’s a liquid memorial to the night the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement found its roar. It’s a story of oppression, anger, solidarity, and ultimate hope, captured in a stunning glass you can hold in your hand.
The Inspiration: More Than a Bar, A Battleground
Our inspiration is The Stonewall Inn, a humble Greenwich Village bar that became the unlikely and eternal birthplace of a revolution. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, when police raided this gay bar for the umpteenth time, the patrons—led by Black and Latina trans women and drag queens like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera—had simply had enough. They fought back. That riot, and the protests that followed, ignited a fire of activism that burned across the world, changing the course of history forever. This cocktail is our tribute to that spark.
The Story: Layers of History, Layers of Flavor
Every ingredient in the Stonewall Sling is a deliberate choice, a flavour representing a part of that legendary struggle.
- The Foundation: Dark Rum. This is the rich, deep base—the weight of systemic oppression and the shadow of the closet that defined so many lives. It’s the unshakeable reality the community faced.
- The Catalyst: Fresh Lime Juice. Sharp, bright, and acidic, this is the sudden, piercing sting of injustice. It’s the anger that finally boiled over, the collective shout of “Enough!”
- The Sweetener: Pineapple Juice. This is the sweetness of solidarity, the unexpected bond that forms when a community unites. It’s the support found in a stranger’s hand, the strength drawn from standing together.
- The Revolution: A Dash of Grenadine. This is the magic. When the cocktail is poured, the crimson grenadine doesn’t just mix in; it rises from the bottom, swirling through the golden liquid like blood spilled, like a flag unfurled, like the dawn of a new era breaking through the night. It’s the unforgettable visual heart of the drink.
Shaken vigorously and strained, this process isn’t just mixing—it’s the chaos, the energy, and the transformative power of the riot itself.
A Visual Tribute: The Drink That Fights Back
The Stonewall Sling is served in a tall Collins glass, making its beautiful, turbulent layers impossible to ignore. The golden-hued body is riotously streaked with deep red. To complete the tribute, we garnish it with a single, proud rainbow flag pick—a symbol of the pride that was claimed from the pavement of Christopher Street. It’s a drink that commands attention, just as the brave souls at Stonewall did.
